This large oak and glass house extension in the Hertfordshire countryside presented us with several challenges. The building is in an area of outstanding natural beauty; making the build subject to strict planning laws. For example, the footprint of the new extension could not exceed the size of the original building. Yet, our client required the living area to appear and feel bigger than the structure it replaced; we managed to achieve this by effective use of vertical space.
With the project nearing completion, we caught up with the building owner, below you can read a rough transcript of the conversation.
Why did you choose the Oak Glasshouse Company?
We met Jim and the team at a popular home renovation show, as we started to look at examples of previous work and explain the remit of the proposed installation, it fast became evident Jim understood our needs.
Over the ensuing months, The Oak Glasshouse Company visited us several times. As we got to know Jim, it became clear he and his team had a mastery of their craft; this presented itself in a variety of ways such as creative solutions to overcome potential planning problems. Jim altered the design several times to accommodate both us and the various planning quirks.
Jim sketched a lot of the changes to present them to us; even these freehand drawings served to influence our decision as they were all so detailed and precise.

Quite simply, this is our forever home.

We had decided on oak and glass; also, it was vital for the general design and overall aesthetics of the building to take into account our proximity to a conservation area.

Do you have a favourite feature?
Although in line with planning requirements the footprint of the building is smaller, the structure contains a lot of glass, and the use of vertical space somehow makes the new building cavernous; this creates a beautiful, open and light space.
