This recent Oak garden room installation features an attractive vaulted ceiling and exposed oak beams, which in turn, serve to complement the existing building; our client provided us with a tight remit and concrete ideas. Everything was planned to the smallest of details; the type of external screws, door hinge styles and the type of joins.
The existing building is grade II listed, and of significant importance with parts of the existing structure dating back to the 1600s and the site itself dating back to at least 1250ad this meant every stage of the build was overseen by a conservation officer.
As to be expected the build presented us with several unique challenges, the roof had to fit seamlessly with the main building for this we sourced reclaimed kent peg tiles. When digging out the footings the team came across some bricks, which turned out to be part of the existing 1250ad structure, this held the build-up to allow English Heritage to inspect the area and judge the historical importance.
We recently spoke with the building owner to understand their general thoughts on the completed building.
What were your reasons for the new building?
Before the new garden room, we had an old hardwood conservatory, over the years the integrity of the structure had become compromised it leaked when we had rain. The windows had misted up, and the wooden window frames had rotted, which meant the windows could no longer be opened without the fear of smashed glass.
Had you already decided on the type of building?
In short yes we had well-formed ideas and had even gone to the trouble of planning to minute detail including hand-forged fixtures and fittings and our preferred style of joins. We used one of the last remaining traditional UK blacksmiths a company called Kirkpatrick based in Walsall to create the hinges and door handles; this attention to detail enabled Jim and his team to recreate the ideas in our mind’s eye faithfully.
How are you using the room?
The room is perfect for entertaining or relaxation particularly in the Summer, with the French doors swung open, and some music on watching the world go by; However, the doors are open most days and serve to bring the outside in. When guests arrive, the rooms oak beams immediately draw interest and provide a firm talking point.
What is your overall impression of the Oak Glasshouse Company?
The overall experience was excellent; Jim’s team followed the brief to exacting standards, the standard of work from the external contractors for both the roof and the underpinning was also outstanding.
Do you have a favourite feature?
We have several! The exposed beams and vaulted ceilings being one, the reclaimed Kent peg tiles make the building look as though it has always been there, the building also gives a feeling of extra space to the entire downstairs area.
